I liked the S&L version much better too, especially the timing of it and the
guitar twang. It hit me so much I've done all sorts of meandering musing about
it since hearing it again for the "first" time.

What do you mean here, as in what is the jazz character of it? To me it still
sounded very folkie, although maybe it's just that I can't get completely away
from hearing the LOTC version too, or away from the story of the song.
