i remember the story behind the "original" version,
vs. the "edited" version goes something like this...
they took out any reference to a sexual relationship
between harold and maude, therefore changing the whole
dynamic of the movie. which, if you've seen the movie,
would completely change the meaning, the message. i
think anyway. 
so they all (bud, ruth, etc.) refused to do any press
or promote the movie at all until the studio agreed to
release the original version. and they held out, and
the studio gave in. so when bud cort won the "french
academy award", the studio didnt tell him for months
because they were still bitter at the stunt. someone
said to him at a party or something "congrats on
winning that award, bud" and his response was "what
the hell are you talking about?"
pretty funny. 
harold and maude is one of my very favorite movies of
all time. it might be my favorite. 
and i love cat stevens, ever since i was a child and
listened to my mom play "sad lisa" on the guitar.
