This was a really great post Mark, thank you. I really love the poetry in
this song and the way that Joni sings it. She seems to use her voice yet
again as another musical instrument.
I've often thought about what she was trying to say in this song and your
post made me think about it some more.
I'll have a take on this.
Could it be that Joni relates herself to this sometimes mythological figure,
this mysterious Mary Magdalene?
Western Christianity have often portrayed her as a prostitute, however there
really isn't any indication in the Bible that she was that at all. Great
Master Artists have often portrayed her clothed in Red and Jesus garbed in
Blue holding a jar from which she has said to have anointed the feet of
Jesus. Some have a theory that she was the beloved disciple that Peter was
jealous of. Could it be that she's talking about male attitudes towards woman
and their contributions to Christianity that began thousands of years ago.
Just some thoughts.
