Hi,
I tried out jruby-0.9.0, and found that it only
worked with Java 5. It seems that jruby and jirb just won't start up with
1.4.2 - I didn't try bsf - because RubyString uses
StringBuffer.append(CharSequence). I didn't find anything on the web site
about dependencies, so I was just wondering if there is anything about Java 5
that JRuby really needs. The new methods in StringBuffer are convenient to
use, but are they necessary?
The last time I could find anything on this list
discussing the pros/cons was 2004 (http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=10188944).
At that time some people seemed to argue strongly that requiring Java 5 was not
going to improve take up from certain industry sectors. I have to say that
I am of that opinion even now in the second half of 2006 (I work in
finance).
Is there any point discussing this?
Dave Syer.
