Hi Dave, Actually, JRuby is targeted for JDK 1.4. The dependency on JDK 5 was an accidental. Charles is going to be releasing a new version that doesn't have dependency on JDK 5. The discussion/bug came up a few days ago.
So, don't worry, JRuby still supports JDK 1.4. :) Peter ________________________________________ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dave Syer Sent: Sunday, July 16, 2006 3:45 AM To: jruby-devel@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [Jruby-devel] Java 5 Hi, I tried out jruby-0.9.0, and found that it only worked with Java 5. It seems that jruby and jirb just won't start up with 1.4.2 - I didn't try bsf - because RubyString uses StringBuffer.append(CharSequence). I didn't find anything on the web site about dependencies, so I was just wondering if there is anything about Java 5 that JRuby really needs. The new methods in StringBuffer are convenient to use, but are they necessary? The last time I could find anything on this list discussing the pros/cons was 2004 (http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=10188944). At that time some people seemed to argue strongly that requiring Java 5 was not going to improve take up from certain industry sectors. I have to say that I am of that opinion even now in the second half of 2006 (I work in finance). Is there any point discussing this?
