Do you mean to suggest that they load more slowly within a JSP that they would when loading the same one from the same server via a simple HTML page? That would be a good test to rule JRun (and JSP in general) out of the picture.
I assume you already realize that in general applets do load more slowly than a plain HTML page, without a high speed network connection, which is why many eschew them.
