It is more regularly pronounced in the Japanese vernacular as *jō*<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Japanese>(an elongated OH sound - joh, and not 'joe'), which is used as a suffix attached to the proper name of a castle: 姫路城 = Himeji-*jō *大阪城 = Osaka-*jō *etc... This is identical in concept to the polite suffix attached to surnames (Tanaka-*san*, Maeda-*san*), but just specific to castles/fortresses. But when you read this character by itself and not as a suffix to a proper name, it can be read as ki ("key"), to indicate just any fortress/castle.
