You folks advocating against starting with jQuery, did you learn to program
in assembler? Do you understand what's going on at the register level and
know that your code is as efficient as possible? If not, what's the
difference?

I would wager that a vast majority of "experts" today learned a high level
abstraction first, then decided to dig deeper. At the end of the day,
jQuery is just a high level abstraction over the DOM (for the most part).

Sure, there are folks who don't care and will never take the opportunity to
learn, but I'm betting that we have a *ton* more JS expertise now simply
due to jQuery (and the other libs) making frond-end development more
approachable.

Telling people not to use it when starting out sounds like "I don't care if
it would lead to more total expertise in the field, I just don't want to
have to deal with all the riff raff."
