ACK. It is OK to have something shown by default and then hide it
using javascript but not vice versa.

CSS support does not imply DOM support nor is the reverse true.

Well, yes, but not entirely. It is still possible for things to be
fouled up in other ways. Remember "operation aborted" with
appendChild?

But this thinking can help avoid more such blunders.
