Hi Sio,
I'm not an expert here, but just want to share my thoughts since I've been
using Apache for quite a long time now before JSPs and servlets came to be.
Well, Apache (just like any other web server software before) has been
designed to serve static pages although it can also run CGI scripts written
in Perl (the all-time favorite language by sys admins). By default, a web
server listens at port 80 for any HTTP request. And anything dynamic (like
user registration) is handled by all these CGI scripts.
Then, came these application servers like Tomcat, JRun, WebLogic, etc...
These Java app servers allow the developer to make use of the Java language
to also create web-based applications using a JSP/servlet/Bean combination,
although they can also be written in Perl. And by default, they use a
different HTTP port, since port 80 is assumed to be in use by a simple web
server. And yes, these Java app servers can be used as a standalone web
server too. But what I don't know if they support Perl scripts. This may be
the reason may people still want to use their time-tested web server -
Apache + Tomcat, or whatever combination just to support their applications
written in Perl. When integrated with a simple web server, all HTML
requests are handled by the webserver while all JSP and servlet request is
passed by the web server to the JSP/servlet engine.
Just my two cents... :-)
