apache is a webserver, tomcat is a servlet container. Tomcat does include
its own webserver but its not as good as apache as is only meant for testing
and development.

If you use apache and tomcat together (the usual way) then apache will serve
your static html files and any request for a servlet or a JSP page will be
handled by tomcat. In this way tomcat 'adds' support for servlets and JSP's
to apache.

In order to do this you will need to connect tomcat to apache, which is done
via an extra module you must download and install called mod_jk. This is
also available from http://jakarta.apache.org.

The configuration and set up is not that difficult, I've just set this up on
a linux server and while the tomcat documentation is a little thin on the
ground there is enough there to get you up and running with a little effort.

You can find everything you need to know here:
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-3.2-doc/index.html. Read through the
docs.

Tomcat and apache are used together in production environments by lots of
ppl, so I wouldn't have any worries about that.

It might help you to join the tomcat mailing list for tomcat specific
issues: http://jakarta.apache.org/site/mail2.html
you can also search the tomcat list archives here:

cheers
