Google? Todd's suggestion of Groovy is not a bad idea either...though you'll still be tied to the JVM (not necessarily a bad thing).

If you are just starting to learn to program I'll stand by Ruby, and Groovy to a lesser extend because the language is secondary to getting the many other skills required to make yourself useful to an employer.
