Its been a good long time, but back in the day I used to help with
interviews. My boss and I used to actually scrutinize resumes with Java
certification more closely because we figured they probably took the exam
because they had no experience. However, I have seen "HR" postings where it
was requested or required. It may be different now.

I'd venture that if you have a good amount of experience, it won't help you.
If you don't, it might and probably won't hurt.

In my experience, practical work in open source software where you can show
code samples is far more helpful. Involvement in JBoss, Jetspeed, or Struts
is probably your "tier one" for business recognition in Open Source. This
is a growing trend in business. Think about what will happen if someone
says "have you any experience with Struts?" and you smile and say "Of
course, I write the X and Y feature." -- "Oh really??? We're using that,
how do you..."
