I took the exam last November. I found it to be more of hinerance than a help, for the very same reason that Andrew outlined. I think potential employers do assume you took it to "cover" for inexperience.
I took it to catch up on about 4 years of Java knowledge. When I found a job with IBM it was for my background in C and C++, plus Linux experience. They said that having the Java cert might help them in the future, but it wasn't something they looked for. However, I have seen "HR" postings where it was requested or required. It may be different now. I'd venture that if you have a good amount of experience, it won't help you. If you don't, it might and probably won't hurt. In my experience, practical work in open source software where you can show code samples is far more helpful. Involvement in JBoss, Jetspeed, or Struts is probably your "tier one" for business recognition in Open Source. This is a growing trend in business.
