Since the subject of Wake Tech came up, let me share something with
you guys, who might not know about this. Wake Tech has a (relatively)
new degree program, titled High Performance Computing. It's the result
of an NSF grant, and is designed to focus on some technologies the NSF
feels are "emerging" and are going to be very important in the next few years.

Specifically, the program deals with things like: Grid Computing, Clusters (Beowulf style), parallel programming, Linux / AIX,
Data Mining, etc.

Some of you might be interested in checking the program out... I decided to go ahead and do it, for a couple of reason:

1. I'm a geek, and this stuff sounds fun

2. As depressed as the job market is, having a novel and
not common-place skillset could potentially be very
   advantageous.

3. there seems to be some evidence that these types of skills are going
to be in high demand in the near future.

4. That may be especially true in the Triangle area.. why? Because the bio-tech and pharmaceutical industries are major users of HPC type
technologies, and the Triangle appears to be shifting it's bias
somewhat away from software / telecom which dominated in the past,
and towards a bio-tech / pharmaceutical bias.

Anybody who's interested, I encourage you to visit Wake Tech's website or give them a call and check into it. Classes are WTCC are fairly
inexpensive (compared to Carolina or State, for sure) and this is some
fairly interesting stuff.

note: no, there's nothing Java specific about the HPC program, but
most (maybe all) of the Java Programming classes are electives in
HPC... so one could get an HPC degree while picking up some cool
Java stuff as well, if one were so inclined.

TTYL,

Phil
