How can I tell Firefox the path to my JRE? Every time I try to run an applet Firefox offers me a link to download the plugin, but I don't need another JRE. I just want Firefox to use the one I have.

Apparently there is a registry key you may have to fiddle with under some circumstances.
Also, just as an FYI, it is definitely possible to make it work - regardless of where your JDK/JRE is installed. I never install my JDK/JRE using the default path, and I've always managed to get Java to work with both Mozilla and Firefox.
