How can I tell Firefox the path to my JRE? Every time I try to run an applet Firefox offers me a link to download the plugin, but I don't need another JRE. I just want Firefox to use the one I have.

Try going into Control Panel and look for the "Java Plugin" icon. Click that and open the corresponding utility... Go to the "Browser" tab, and see if you have any entries that reference Mozilla / Firefox, which are not currently checked. If you do, check the ones that look appropriate (I'm being vague about that part, because it depends on what exactly you have installed on your machine). Click "Apply" and if the plugin should try to register itself to work with the browser(s) you selected. If you selected a browser that isn't really installed (or at least one that the Plugin thinks isn't installed) it will throw up an error dialog at you. Deselect ones it won't accept and try again.

If you don't have the Java Plugin applet in Control Panel, or if all the
checkboxes on the Browsers tab are already checked, I'd suggest hoping
somebody else chimes in, or Google for Firefox and "Java Plugin." You
may find yourself having to manually copy some .dll files around to make
it work, in the worst case.

HTH, IANAL, YMMV, etc...
