In the code we wrote at Vivid, reprojection was only done when 
requested, on data load. 

Trying to implement reprojection on the fly gets you into all kinds of 
gnarly design issues - I'm sure Jody can fill you in on the fun they had 
in uDig trying to make this work transparently.

I could see reproj-on-the-fly being available for read-only datasets, 
but I for one won't be signing up to do it for the general case...
