Seems a good idea to me (still, there was another argument about 
usability of checkbox on some devices)
Another point is the setVisibility of images : I don't know why we have 
a checkbox similar to normal layer checkbox for the old image framework, 
but the new raster framework works differently (no check box, I think a 
simple click change the visibility, but I've not a good experience with 
this). Needs to be reworked at some point.

Agree with the general idea. We don't have to move too fast though, as 
we should only cleanup when we are sure what the best place is.
