I did not notice this contradiction, but now that you say...
And I've rarely used the toolbar button to close the toolbox,
but it makes sense and I can change ;-)

A wrench/hammer would not be much more expressive from my point of view.
Hammer is often used for advanced settings, not for editing. I'm not 
convinced
we have to change, but if we choose to do, I'd rather choose an icon 
containing
items such as a point, a linestring and a polygon.
