More information:  Apparently the buzzword to look for is support for JSR
209 "Advanced Graphics and User Interface (AGUI)".  See:

Apparently it isn't widely supported:

That just about kills my interest in this project.  If someone finds a real
device with JSR 209 support, I'll look again.  Without Swing, the whole UI
would have to be rewritten.
