When I want to produce bytecode, I use javac (the backend, I create a tree and call the gen pass) or ASM. ASM is really great but I'm biased, I am one of the developer I use javap (John Gibbons did a great job to revamp it for 1.7) and the bytecode outline eclipse plugin (http://asm.ow2.org/eclipse/index.html) when I want to browse bytecodes.
