Reboot doesn't solve the problem. I've rebooted many times and tried
various post-reboot tactics to no avail. Specifically, I've rebooted, and
then immediately (as soon as I'm able to) polled for new mail in the inbox.
Subsequently, push fails. Alternately, I've rebooted and waited for new
mail to come in on its own. Subsequently, push fails. I've also updated to
the latest Android subversion (4.2.2) and that didn't change the behavior.

It does appear to me that push is broken. I like K9 overall, but my
litmus-test reason for choosing it as my primary email client was IMAP push
(all non-push clients were ruled out for lack of that one feature). It
worked until recently (within the last month or so?). I think it was my
upgrade to the 4.8 series that is most closely correlated to it stopping
working. Therefore, I suspect something changed between the previous
version and this one (I don't recall what I had installed before but it had
been a while since I upgraded).

In my opinion, this is a high priority problem that requires a solution.

Is there something I can do to help?
