I'm not certain what happens when you uninstall the app but it's possible what 
ever file tracks which emails you've downloaded was not deleted this preventing 
you from being able to download them again.

You might try restoring k9 from the backup you made.

Otherwise, uninstall k9, use a file browser to fund any k9 related dukes and 
delete them, reinstall, profit.
