Even more info after another test: When K9 is automatically polling a Gmail POP account, it may automatically also download the email body (if the body is less than the specified size in Settings). In that case, K9 *does* leave the email on the server (even though it has downloaded the body), but it still displays the "Download complete message" button, for some reason.
So the problem only seems to occur when the user clicks the "Download complete message" button.
