Thanks Seth, for chiming in... Perhaps K9 does not display in-line images, but it should show them when "more" is pressed. A message sent directly to POP3 and retrieved from same succeeded, as did example #1 in my original post. But example two did not. No test showed attached images; placeholder only. Meanwhile, the integral mail app displayed them all, though it too has its failings when forwarding is involved.
And there's a further problem: K9 displays no message text when single messages are opened - until it's force-stopped and restarted.
