I figured out the answer to my second question:  when notifications
are present, I can "zoom into them" for more info and actions by
touching them with two fingers and spreading my fingers apart.

But I'm still not sure why some messages trigger a notification and
some don't.  Could it be that messages I send myself (as a test) don't
trigger notifications for some reason?
