not sure how relevant this is, but, what I do, whenever I've been sending photos (or other large(er) attachments) with my emails, I delete from Sent stuff with paper clip icon, then, long press on account, Clear Trash, and, I see reported size reduced.
(There is a minor glitch when it says 'reduced from xxx', it seems to report incorrect size in that message) I guess you are saying it's not working at your device?
