This depends on the server and its configuration.  It's best not to rely
on this, and to always enable periodic polling.

I believe the gmail app communicates with the gmail server using a
custom protocol that goes beyond what gmail provides via IMAP, so this
doesn't show that k9 is at fault.

In any case, if you enable periodic polling, you should be fine.
