On my S4 Active (AT&T) I'm using the stock email app for my @aim.com email
address (which is an AOL address). I have *smtp.aim.com* with *SSL*, Port
*465* and *Require Sign-in* checked. I just tried to send an email & it
worked fine. So, either the difference is *aim* instead of *aol* or it's
your carrier. Can't hurt for you to try using *smtp.aim.com* instead.

Another option would be to try the AOL app....
