Actually, this is the way the POP protocol is designed to work, defaulting to 
downloading the message onto the local machine and then removing the message 
from the server. It is older than IMAP, which was developed after hard drive 
space became less expensive (so that servers could afford to dedicate more 
space per user), and people also started having more than one device that they 
read email from.
