I use similar, self certified Postfix/Dovecot, 587/143, set as follows:

starttls/143/normal password
starttls/587/normal password

You should get a message on first attempt send/receive to accept cert.

Works good since forever, only issues, some public Wi-Fi services don't allow 
587.
