I hace the same problem.

the problem with the solution proposed by richard ( - [global] 
settings > network > background sync > never) is that K-9 will start to 
misbehave with some actions, as when you delete mail.

I think ([Folder Poll Frequency] > Never) should do what it's supposed to 
do.

This has many uses, for example, to check accounts used for notifications, 
witch can get many emails each minute, and you don't want to be notified 
each time.... or when you want to check randomly shared emails, so to see 
if the back log is well threaten by your employees....
