Thanks Mathguy! I was able to choose not to optimize K9 under doze, which restored the automatic syncing (see http://www.greenbot.com/article/3112224/android/what-you-need-to-know-about-doze-mode-in-android-nougat.html for a useful article). However, I still can't get the flashing notification light to work the way it used to before android 7.
