I have been having the same issue with my Samsung S7 Edge and already tried a lot of things. The menus are a bit different on the Samsung so the only thing I can find is Settings - > Device Management -> Battery -> Unmonitored Apps. There I can add K9 to the list. I think it should be the same thing that fixed it for you. However it doesn't fix it for me. A lot of the times I don't get my emails pushed and K9 will say Syncing disabled. It think this should be related to Doze but I cannot seem to get it to work on Android 7 Nougat. So right now K9 doesn't really work for me at all. This was all fine since I first started using Android 5 years ago...
