Had the same thing on my Pixel XL. To correct it in settings search for Battery Optimization. There is a drop down for All Apps. Scroll down to K9 Maiil and select it. It will give two options. Optimized and Don't optimize. Select Don't Optimize. Done and back out of settings. This corrected it for me. It no longer goes into the Not Synchronized status.
