I had this problem ("Syncing disabled") after getting a new Galaxy S7,
and then upgrading from Android 6 to Android 7. I did the following,
and things have been fine for about a week now:

- In k9 > Global Settings > Network > Background sync: changed it
from "Always" to "When 'Auto-sync' is checked. This seems like a
step backwards, but it caused syncing to start once when I tried it.
It might be that it just causes k9 to reset itself in some way,
  so it might be irrelevant.

- In Device Maintenance > Battery, in the App power monitor section,
make sure k9 is not checked. (It was not.) Also, added k9 to
"Unmonitored apps", lower on that screen.

- In Device Maintenance > Battery > Battery Usage, selected Optimize
battery usage from three dot menu, selected "All apps", and then
  turned off optimization for k9.

Note that the last two are separate settings. I don't understand
why there are two different types of "doze", but I think many people
who can't solve this problem only adjust one of these settings, not
both.

Dan

PS: I'm getting excellent battery life, even with the above settings.
Android says that k9 is using only 0.08% of my battery per hour.
