I'm having the same problem. My Network Setting in K-9 Is set to Background Sync: Always.
I also have periodic polling turned on to make sure I get messages that IDLE/PUSH may have missed or if it lost connection. After the first poll. K-9 goes back to Sync Disabled. I've tried just about every option I can think of and sync keeps getting turned off and I'm missing email notifications!
