p.s. did the latest CVS version fix the remaining problems for you with ant 1.5.3? Then I'd update the compatibility web page accordingly ...
I've updated my CVS snapshot today, but haven't had change to give it a twirl yet. Let me play over the weekend and send through a updated "how-to-run". (For instance, with a basic setup, you don't need the swing jar at all.)
