Peter Wigg confirmed that the question is solved:
I've no idea why but even though the format appears to be UNIX I took
your advice and ran:
fromdos < Grid.... > Grid...
and now it works! Excellent advice thanks very much for the help :)
Still a bit puzzled by WHY it worked...
