The Windows CRT monitor people use CRU to do that, and that just seems... unnecessarily convoluted when xrandr does that infinitely more cleanly. Add a modeline, boom, done. If the Wayland solution requires custom EDIDs that'd be a massive step back, and currently it's an even _huger_ step back (like, straight-up breaking) because you can't really do it at all.
