I had added no-allow-external-cache to gpg-agent.conf as suggested elsewhere in this thread, and after rebooting, the original error (secret_service_load_collections_sync: assertion 'paths != NULL' failed / "Could not connect to Secret Service") no longer appears in my logs at all.
