Does this only affect the Places tab, or does the same happen in the Applications tab? (All three should have an entry there, likely in System) Similarly if you go to "applications:" in Dolphin. You could also try launching plasmashell with QT_LOGGING_RULES="org.kde.plasma.kicker.debug=true" plasmashell to get extended Application Launcher logs.
