I'm encountering this on 5.3.4-Appimage on XFCE 4.20 as well.

Suggesting some solutions:

1. Krita should handle "malformed" data or "missing metadata" or whatever it is
that XFCE's copy buffer is doing instead of crashing. If the system copy buffer
is no good for usage for whatever reason, then use the last copy buffer stored
in Krita itself. Never just crash.

2. Optionally, we should be able to configure a user setting in Krita such that
it always uses an internal copy buffer instead of trying to round trip for a
local copy-paste.

3. Krita should use an internal copy buffer if the application has not been
unfocused. This is basically a "smart" version of option 2. You can be pretty
certain that a user that has copied recently from Krita, who then wants to
paste, most likely wants the data that was just copied, instead of whatever was
round-tripped to the host system.

Possible benefits of not round-tripping data is also a reduction in lag caused
by copy-paste doing this in the first place.
