If by iiimx thingies you mean the keyboard input method mini-window, 
there should be a couple of better ways. I experienced it too (while 
setting cs_CZ.UTF-8 on my konsole, then running for example openoffice).

I disabled it in 'iiim-properties' (uncheck "Enable Input Method").
