I never choosed the hal backend. It is there, bacause other ports depends on it (or any port-maintainer "choosed" the hal backend).
HAL support in KDE is controlled via the HAL option of the x11/kdebase3 port. As long as you do not enable HAL there, you do not need to enable the daemons mentioned in UPDATING to run KDE, even if HAL is installed.
