Quoting Michael Nottebrock <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Oh, and one more point, probably the most important one:

Regardless of whether HAL-backed media:/ is real progress or just the
emperor's new clothes, KDE has made the choice for us - the old
fstab-backend doesn't support mounting media anymore since KDE 3.5.4 - all
it does it pop up a message box to please install HAL if you want to that
sort of thing.

What we did in ports (and still do if the user doesn't enable HAL in
kdebase' options), is patch KDE 3.5.3's media:/ kioslave code back in,
which of course is a rather outrageous hack and totally unsupported. :) So
I guess it is in everyone's interest, no matter if they like HAL or not,
to make sure it works right on FreeBSD and KDE on FreeBSD.

Thanks, Michael. I guess it is time to bite the bullet and add the daemons and learn to use them if we want to continue to use kde.

I hope you are having great holidays,

ed

Cheers,
