Oh, and one more point, probably the most important one: Regardless of whether HAL-backed media:/ is real progress or just the emperor's new clothes, KDE has made the choice for us - the old fstab-backend doesn't support mounting media anymore since KDE 3.5.4 - all it does it pop up a message box to please install HAL if you want to that sort of thing.
What we did in ports (and still do if the user doesn't enable HAL in kdebase' options), is patch KDE 3.5.3's media:/ kioslave code back in, which of course is a rather outrageous hack and totally unsupported. :) So I guess it is in everyone's interest, no matter if they like HAL or not, to make sure it works right on FreeBSD and KDE on FreeBSD.
