Maps to a person or service, or whatever, really, anything with a key.
Some words just don't have explanations - what is "left"? Online
dictionary says "the location or direction of the left side". Principal
is not so elemental as "left", but your idea is about right - it's a
principal, because that's what we call Kerberos entities. ("Principal
identifier"? Perhaps it's better that we have forgotten that, unless
it's actually relevant, like if there are secondary identifiers.)

I can understand only a little German, but a quick web search suggests
that they use "Principal"! The language seems to be degenerating a bit,
with all those words borrowed from Latin usw.
