[kicad-users] Specifying footprints using the EESchema "Footprint" field

Is it possible to specify a part's footprint using the EESchema "Footprint" 
field instead of using CVPCB? I tried it and the resulting netlist still had 
the $noname place holders. When I started up CVPCB is showed no footprint 
sssociations.
